Reports about Musk’s new startup emerged in April, hinting that he had acquired a substantial number of GPU processors from Nvidia to potentially power a large language model. In a previous interview on Fox News Channel, Musk discussed his plans for an AI tool named “TruthGPT” and expressed concerns about existing AI companies overly prioritizing political correctness.
xAI benefits from the advisory expertise of Dan Hendrycks, executive director of the Center for AI Safety, a San Francisco-based nonprofit. In May, the center published a letter signed by tech leaders, advocating for global prioritization of mitigating AI risks, similar to other significant risks like pandemics and nuclear war.
Greg Yang, the co-founder of xAI, emphasized the startup’s focus on advancing the mathematics of deep learning, a crucial aspect of AI. Their ambition is to develop the “theory of everything” for large neural networks, propelling AI to unprecedented heights.
Musk incorporated xAI in Nevada in March, briefly changing the name of Twitter to “X Corp.” in financial filings, although xAI’s website clarifies that it is a separate entity.
